This is an excellent spot to spend a night or two while discovering the northern part of Yellowstone National Park. Gardiner is nearby, offering convenient access to food and dining options. The Mammoth area is renowned for attracting large numbers of elk, particularly during the spring season, and it’s not uncommon to see elk wandering near the campground itself. During my own camping experience in Yellowstone, I encountered mother elk who were very protective of their young, and I made sure to keep my distance for safety.

Additionally, the Mammoth campground is situated along a winding stretch of the park’s main road, which means it can be fairly noisy with constant traffic as visitors come and go throughout the day and night. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider booking a site further away from the main road. The campground is located in an open sagebrush environment with sparse tree coverage, which offers limited shade. As a result, it may be difficult to set up a tarp in case of rain.

Canyon Campground is a fantastic choice for camping, especially since the reopening of Dunraven Pass in 2022, which had been under construction for several years. While Madison Campground is also a solid option, I would argue that Canyon has a slight advantage in its location, but Madison is a bit more convenient for those looking to stay closer to the geyser basins, which are one of my favorite attractions in the park.

One of the highlights of camping at Canyon is the easy access to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, allowing for peaceful exploration during the early morning or evening hours when there are fewer visitors around. On my visit, I arrived in the afternoon, got checked in, set up camp, and had some time to enjoy a meal before heading out to explore North Rim Drive. The area was wonderfully quiet, with little to no crowds, and I didn’t have to deal with long waits for parking. Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit Artist Point on the South Rim early the next morning, and for about twenty minutes, I had the place all to myself before other visitors arrived.

Another perk of Canyon Campground is its size, it’s large, similar to Madison, but the campsites tend to feel more private, likely thanks to the surrounding trees. If you’re looking for places to stay in Yellowstone National Park, Canyon offers a great option for those who enjoy a more secluded atmosphere. For those who prefer other accommodations, there are also many places to stay in Yellowstone National Park that provide easy access to the park’s natural wonders while offering a range of amenities.

I truly wish I could extend my stay at Grant Village Campground, it was such a fantastic spot! I was lucky enough to book a site on the second-to-last night of the 2021 season, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip.

I stayed in the tent-only loop and had a generous, private site, J350. After a few cramped nights at Madison, this campsite in Yellowstone National Park felt incredibly spacious! It was nestled among towering, mature lodgepole pines, creating a peaceful environment perfect for unwinding in my hammock. As an added bonus, the trees provided some protection from the rain that rolled in later that evening. However, one downside was the distance between my site and the restrooms as well as the dishwashing station, which made those trips a bit of a walk.

Grant Village is definitely one of the great places to stay in Yellowstone National Park if you’re looking for a serene camping experience.
