Best Overall: Arc’teryx Gamma Hoody ($300 on Amazon)
- Fabric type: Wee Burly Double Weave 56% nylon 34% polyester 10% elastane bluesign

- Closure type: Zipper
The Arc’teryx Gamma Hoody continues to excel in its category, and we enthusiastically endorse it with our utmost praise. This lightweight climbing jacket provides everything desired in a piece of clothing intended for mountain activities while also being fashionable enough for casual use. It has a great fit due to skillfully designed panels, allows freedom of movement during intense activities, and offers excellent breathability with its unlined, moisture-wicking softshell fabric.
Arc’teryx products are known for their high-quality construction, and the Gamma LT adheres to this standard. However, features like adjustable wrist cuffs could enhance its functionality. Despite this minor feedback, we consider it one of the best softshells available and highly recommend it. For those in need of a robust softshell for harsh weather, the larger version, the Arc’teryx Gamma MX Hoody, is a great option.

Best for Wet: Rab Kinetic 2.0 ($260 on Amazon)
- Fabric type: 100% Polyester
- Care instructions: Hand Wash Only
- Product Dimensions: 37 x 25 x 5 inches; 11.85 ounces
- Customer Reviews: 4.4/5
The Rab Kinetic 2.0 is the most lightweight climbing jacket we offer. When heavy rain hits, it outperforms other options, making it ideal for those living in wet areas who still need the breathability of a softshell. This hybrid layer is well-crafted and effectively combines the functions of two jackets.
The Kinetic features a fitted design that is quite snug, and its hood is intended to fit under a helmet rather than over it. As such, we suggest choosing a larger size if you plan to wear thick insulating layers beneath.
Overall, we were impressed by the capabilities of this lightweight climbing jacket, but keep in mind that while it is very water-resistant, it does not offer the same level of waterproofing as a dedicated rain jacket.
Best for Climbing: MARMOT Ramble Component Jacket
- Fabric type: 100% Recycled Polyester Plain weave
- Care instructions: Machine Wash
- Origin: Imported
- Customer Reviews: 4.5/5
The Marmot Ramble Component Jacket is our preferred choice for activities like winter climbing and skiing, where increased coverage is as crucial as superior weather protection. It utilizes Gore-Tex Infinium fabric in important areas, making it suitable when you need extra protection without opting for a full hardshell.
However, the MARMOT isn’t the lightest softshell available, and we believe its fit may not appeal to everyone. On the positive side, it has user-friendly cuffs that accommodate various gloves, a spacious hood compatible with helmets, and ample pockets for storing your snacks, skin wax, maps, and more. We especially appreciate the longer waist design, which provides excellent coverage while using a climbing harness or backpack, effectively blocking cold gusts and blowing snow on the skin track.

Best for Woman: Outdoor Research Women’s Helium Rain Jacket
- Fabric type: Nylon
- Care instructions: Hand Wash Only
- Origin: Imported
- Customer Reviews: 5/5
Many lightweight climbing jackets typically begin at around $400, making Outdoor Research’s priced at $279 an attractive choice. OR manages to keep costs down by utilizing their own AscentShell membrane instead of Gore-Tex, along with a thinner design and standard features. Nevertheless, the MicroGravity stands out: we tested it during a hike in the stormy Cerro Castillo range in Patagonia and were pleased with its performance, comfort, and breathability. Overall, OR’s AscentShell ranks among the best proprietary materials we’ve encountered, featuring a soft lining, stretchy outer fabric for ease of movement, and a wallet-friendly price.
Our main concern with the MicroGravity is its fit: it feels quite slim (even for a hardshell) and particularly constricting at the waist when layered. Additionally, the hood’s design could be improved: when adjusted over a ball cap, the cinch cord sits uncomfortably over the ears; however, it does fit well with climbing and skiing helmets. Regarding weather resistance and durability, the lightweight climbing jacket’s relatively lightweight shell (20D x 45D) doesn’t compare to a more robust winter hardshell.

Rab Kinetic Alpine Waterproof Breathable Jacket ($310 on Amazon)
- Care instructions: Hand Wash Only
- Product Dimensions: 35 x 23 x 3 inches; 14.9 ounces
- Customer Reviews: 4.3/5
If you’re searching for something unique, consider checking out Rab’s Kinetic Alpine 2.0 jacket. This lightweight climbing jacket combines essential hardshell features like a waterproof membrane, fully taped seams, and a hood compatible with helmets, along with the stretchy knit fabric typical of softshells. The result is exceptional comfort, flexibility, and breathability for hiking and climbing while still offering reasonable protection against wind and rain. Priced at just $310, it delivers impressive performance in a lightweight package, weighing only 14.9 ounces.
Like many hybrid soft/hardshell options, the Rab jacket does have a notable drawback in terms of weather protection. Generally, the outer fabric will absorb water faster than that of a traditional hardshell, making it less dependable during prolonged heavy rain. However, the Kinetic Alpine 2.0 excels in strong winds and offers better moisture resistance compared to conventional wind jackets and softshells.
Montane Phase Nano ($242.33 on Amazon)
- Fabric type: 100% Nylon
- Care instructions: Hand Wash Only
- Package Dimensions: 34 x 16 x 3 inches; 15.17 ounces
- Customer Reviews: 5/5
Montane refers to the Phase Nano as their lightest and most breathable waterproof jacket made from Gore-Tex. At a mere 250g, this jacket provides three-layer waterproof protection and includes several practical design features such as a full-length water-resistant front zipper, a hood that can be adjusted in three ways, and shaped cuffs.
This lightweight climbing jacket utilizes Gore-Tex Active, which is a lightweight variant of Gore’s three-layer waterproof fabric designed for enhanced breathability. Although it’s primarily designed for trail running, its adjustable hood, spacious hand warmer pockets, and storm flap also make it suitable for summer hiking—though the 13D fabric may be somewhat thin for use with a heavily loaded backpack. The Phase Nano is currently offered for both men and women.

Best for Men: Helly-Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 2.0 Waterproof Shell Jacket ($405 on Amazon)
- Fabric type: Polyamide
- Care instructions: Hand Wash Only
- Origin: Imported
- Customer Reviews: 4.3/5
Helly Hansen offered an XL size Odin 9 Worlds 3.0 waterproof lightweight climbing jacket, making it suitable to be worn over an insulated layer without feeling constricted. This jacket is built for harsh winter conditions and is both lightweight and rigid. The front pockets feature a double-layer design for excellent airflow. The hood can accommodate a helmet and can be secured around either a hat or an unprotected head. It has spacious pockets that can carry a significant amount of equipment, with double zip pullers for convenient access.
A smaller pocket on the chest is perfect for storing a compass or smartphone. Although the underarm zips have double zip pullers, they tend to be stiff and cumbersome to operate. The wide cuffs are designed to fit over gloves and provide ventilation. While this jacket excels in winter mountain environments, it is quite heavy and excessive for summer use.
What to look for in a lightweight climbing jacket?
When shopping for a lightweight climbing jacket, aside from the cost, here are the key features to consider:
- Waterproof material is essential.
- A breathable fabric is important to avoid overheating.
- It should be lightweight, ideally under 400 grams.
- Look for a compact design that can easily be packed away.
- A good hood with a peak is necessary to shield your eyes from rain.
- Vents that can be closed are useful for allowing cool air in as needed.
- There should be at least one pocket that can fit an Ordnance Survey map.
About Our Testing Process
The NationalPark Shop team initially created this guide featuring 15 selections. While many of those jackets are no longer available, a few—especially the Arc’teryx Beta AR remain in our collection today. For 2024. Senior editor John Smith spearheads the lineup, conducting research and testing hardshell jackets while traversing mountaintops from the southern US to Africa and Nepal. Other team members contribute by selecting the appropriate shell for various activities such as backpacking and backcountry skiing.
A hardshell jacket is among the most valuable layers you can have; these waterproof and windproof garments shield you from harsh conditions while allowing for layering underneath according to the weather and your activity. They are generally more breathable than 2- and 2.5-layer rain jackets, making it crucial for our testing to experience strenuous conditions in bad weather. We also carefully evaluate aspects like weight, fit, features, and overall comfort. Although it may not suit everyone (a rain jacket or softshell might be more appropriate for some uses), a lightweight climbing jacket is vital for those venturing into high altitudes or deep snow.
FAQs
How waterproofness and breathability are measured?
Waterproofness is typically measured in millimeters (mm) using a pressure test. A fabric is placed under a tube filled with water, and the height of the water column that the fabric can withstand before leaking determines its waterproof rating. For example, a rating of 10,000 mm means the fabric can resist the pressure of a 10-meter column of water.
Breathability is measured in grams per square meter per 24 hours (g/m²/24hrs), indicating how much moisture vapor can pass through the fabric over a day. Higher numbers indicate better breathability, allowing sweat to escape while keeping rain out.
How to look after the best lightweight climbing jackets?
To properly care for lightweight climbing jackets, it is essential to follow specific maintenance steps to ensure their longevity and performance. Begin by washing the jacket carefully using a gentle detergent; it’s important to avoid fabric softeners as they can obstruct the fabric’s pores, reducing breathability. When it comes to drying, air drying is preferable to preserve the material’s integrity. However, if a dryer is necessary, use a low heat setting to prevent damage.
Over time, the jacket’s water resistance may diminish, so it’s advisable to periodically reapply a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) spray to restore this feature. For storage, the jacket should either be hung or folded with care to prevent creases or fabric damage, thereby maintaining its shape and functionality for future adventures.
Is waterproof or breathable better in a rain gear jacket?
The ideal rain jacket should balance both waterproofness and breathability. A jacket that is highly waterproof but not breathable can trap moisture inside, leading to discomfort. Conversely, a breathable jacket that isn’t sufficiently waterproof won’t protect you from rain. Therefore, look for jackets labeled as “waterproof/breathable” for optimal performance in wet conditions.
